全体的にふっくらとした体形をして、眼が赤いことも特徴。

汽水域によく見られ、よく釣りあげられる。

肝臓・卵巣・腸は猛毒、皮膚は強毒、精巣・筋肉に毒をもつ。調理はフグ免許が必要。
